(Amber Garvin from Provo, Utah served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as 'Mormons') in the Richmond, Virginia area (Now called the "Virginia Chesapeake Mission"). 'Sister' Missionaries are able to serve at age 19 for a period of 18 months. They leave their homes, families and educational pursuits to love and serve their fellowman, and to teach about how families can be together forever. All are invited to follow her missionary experiences.)

*I have now returned home to Utah and will continue to share the experiences of being a returned missionary. :)

I'm being Transferred to Nags Head, North Carolina. My "Ode" to Rocky Mount.

Dear Everyone,

So I got my transfer call.  I am going to Nags Head, North Carolina.  I will be companions with Sister Petrie.  She arrived to the mission with Sister Felt. Sister Quiroz will be taking my place in Rocky Mount.
"Selfie' - from a members Ipad.  :)

I keep crying.  And everytime I think that I'm all run out of tears there seems to be a back-up supply come from somewhere.
Bodies.... they are so funny.

I don't remember if I wrote an Ode to Jamestown, but I'm definetly writing an Ode to Rocky Mount.  Humor is the only way I know how to cope with heartbreak. (Insert HUGE sigh here)

Ode to Rocky Mount:
(To the tune of "You can Make the Pathway Bright")

In this land called Rocky Mount,
I have learned to smile not pout.
With my Southern family(ies)
Even in the darkest days
there were brightly beaming rays
as we searched diligently.

CHORUS:
For the people who God loves.
We found them here, and there.
They were placed everywhere.
And I know that He is pleased.
With the work of the Sisters here.

I have learned to love a lot,
and the Spirit's in my heart,
I have worked so mightily.
There is still much to be done,
by another one,
and I pray she'll arrive safely.

CHORUS:
For the people who God loves.
We found them here, and there.
They were placed everywhere.
And I know that He is pleased.
With the work of the Sisters here.

Through some small and simple things
I have grown stronger wings
and I know that I'm not done
There is yet some sky to fly
Under Heaven's watchful eye,
it will shape a greater destiny.

CHORUS:
For the people who God loves.
We found them here, and there.
They were placed everywhere.
And I know that He is pleased.
With the work of the Sisters here.

I know this chorus is silly,
but it's true enough to me,
I know that I am loved.
This journey has been long,
but I have become more
than I ever could've been before.

CHORUS 2:
And I know that there is need
for my service here and there,
I will go to anywhere.
(even the ocean where I might be killed my a hurricane or tsunami or eaten by a Kitty Hawk, or lost in the city of Roanoke, or fall off the sand bar, or see a jellyfish, or a beached whale, or stub my leg on hidden pirate booty, or whatever else bad can happen.....)

The Lord has promised me,
that if I follow him I will succeed.

So this is humorous, and serious.  But it's all true.

I wish anyone the opportunity to be on the Lord's errand in this blessed place.
I love it!

I love you!
Goodbye until next week!

Love,
Sister Amber Garvin

'Transfers' - Rocky Mount, North Carolina, LDS Sister Missionaries

I think that I will keep this week brief.
We received our transfer call a day earlier than expected.  Saturday!  So I've known for a little while longer than usual, but the good news is that Transfer calls are inspired, and I can trust that the Lord knows what's best. Plus, I keep praying almost daily that we will be led by the Spirit to know where to go, what to do, and what to say.
So I will be staying in Rocky Mount, and training another missionary.  In all sincerity I am excited, and I feel good about it, but I'm trying really hard to maintain commitment to serving with all my" heart, might, mind and strength" because I am tired!!!!!  I guess it will be good though because new missionaries always have a lot of energy, and drive.  I know that will help me keep going.  I just hope I don't get dragged along! :)
Sad to be losing Sister Watt, and so are many of the members of the ward.  She has left a big impression here. :)  Funny though because her next area is like 20 minutes south of here, in Wilson.  They have a wonderful ward there, and the Sister who will be her new companion is basically me. :)  She and I came out at the same time-- she was called to the Raleigh Mission though and I was Richmond.  She and I also have basically the same sense of humor, and personality.  I love her, and hope that Sister Watt will as well.
So that the status update.
I just love all of you!
keep in Touch --- Kay!  :)

Love,
Sister Garvin

Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, LDS Sister Missionaries

I suppose that I ought to write an incredibly long letter about each person that I talked with on Christmas, everything that we did, the wonderful time that we had, and all the food that I ate.

But it's easier to write it in one generalized, unspecific paragraph.  So there ya go.

We had a Christmas Mission Conference on Christmas Eve, which I may have mentioned last week... I don't remember.... But it was great.

I had a cold.  Which was gross.  I lugged around an entire box of tissues in my purse, and had to stuff the used ones in an empty purse pocket.  Don't worry.  It was dignified.  Because I'm a missionary.  Also, one of the things that makes me feel the most self-conscious is blowing my nose in public.... So I tried to keep that to a minimum.

The conference itself was really great!  President Baker put on 'Muppet Christmas Carol' movie, and we ate some good food, and there were many talented, and courageous people that performed musical numbers for our enjoyment and benefit.  So we had a good time.

It was weird though because it was sunny and 80 degrees.....also, the grass is still green.  But it's the spirit of Christ that makes it Christmas, and I was feelin' it.

Being able to talk with you my family (including all of you that I spoke with) Was the best Christmas present that I could have asked for!
I hope that it wasn't too demanding to pick a time for me to call, but I loved it.

Also, sorry if me crying made you uncomfortable.  It's a new part of me that I'm trying to learn to embrace, but sometimes it makes people uncomfortable.  So, uh..... yeah.... That happened.  I was crying all over the place.  What a new experience-- to go right along with the green grass and 80 degree weather I suppose.

In conclusion, and summation (which I'm hoping that word means is another form of summary---sometimes I use words that I don't know the meaning to.... I have a dictionary though and will look up the proper definition of that word when I get home, and if I'm off base y'all have permission to laugh....) Christmas was good.  I don't have a cold anymore, and I learned much from people about focusing on what the true meaning of worshiping the Savior's birth is: following His example, service, love, compassion, charity, doing things of eternal value, developing meaningful relationships, and being kind to all those you meet.

These attributes have a much greater value than material possessions, and that is what made my Christmas here special.  LOVE.

I hope that we can make everyday in this new year a Merry Christmas, and I propose that it can be.  If the Spirit of Christmas is feeling the love of our Savior Jesus Christ can we not feel it year round?

We can! And we should.

Now add it to yer'  New Years' Resolutions, (but really stick with this one for the whole year. :)

I love you, and wish that you will each feel the joy that comes from feeling love, and loving others in this next phase of "our" lives.

Talk to you next year! ;)

Love forever,
Sister Amber Garvin

Tuesday, September 3, 2013, Williamsburg, Virginia, LDS/Mormon Missionaries

Hello,
My name is Sister Garvin.
I'm a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Sister Amber Garvin - 2013
I bear a message about "the good news" of the Gospel, which is centered around your Savior, and my Savior, Jesus Christ.
I know that the message which I share is true, and I know that no matter what stage of life you may be in it can bring strength, relief, and courage to face anything that may lie ahead.
I am not here to change your faith, only to build upon it.
I am here to teach.
I am here to testify that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
He loves you, and he knows you.
I am here to witness of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, I know it to be the word of God.
I am here to share this message to all who will heed it.
I am here to lead others to Christ by helping them to receive the teaching of this restored gospel, and to exercise their faith unto repentance.
I am here to love.
I am here to learn.
Most importantly, I am here to serve.
God is mighty.  Through many small and simple things I have been a witness to the power of everyday miracles this week.  I wish that I could share all of them.

Something that I learned from somebody important to me this week we were talking about chances/percentages.
I learned this: God can work with a 10% chance. In fact, He can work with a 0.00000000000001% chance.  I'm not completely sure how small a percent can get, but I KNOW with all conviction that God can work with that low of a percent chance.

"...The things which are impossible with men are possible with God." (Luke 18:27)

I have probably said it before, and I know that most of my letters are probably pretty redundant, but I will continue on with stating the things that I have learned.

Ours is a God of second chances.

Do you understand how profound that is?

We have the option of a second chance no matter where we have been, where we are, or who we are.  We are only defined by the limits we set for ourselves.  Our Father truly loves us, and desires our success.  For that reason He doesn't set limits on us.  With limits all things are not possible. In the context that I am pondering limits-- they are man made.

In this context, limitless and impossible are synonymous.

Also, I really think that this pondering that is occurring in my brain ought to be published in a book or something.  In my very apparent opinion, these thoughts are not that of a not-quite-yet 20 year old woman.  Whew!
I know another thing for certain, I am grateful that grandma is saving all these letters, because if I don't have a book published, I sure am going to make a giant quote wall with my face on it along with all the profound thoughts that I forget I send home! :)

For those people that have been instruments in the Lord's hands for making my perceived limitations possible I thank you most graciously.  Thank you for encouraging and supporting me in overcoming the things that I thought were impossible, and for allowing me to experience this time of growth, and profound thought.  You will never truly know what a lasting, and infinite effect it has had on the welfare of my soul.

Sorry, no more time.
Get me published! ;)
Just kidding.
It would probably make me blush.

Love you always!
Sister Amber Garvin

P.S. Will send photos next week!
